Right now I have to say I prefer the PS2, only because I don't have an X-Box yet :D
Each has it's strengths and weaknesses. If you can afford it, get both (both are cheaper than upgrading a computer to keep up with current games). Barring that, look for games you want that are platform dependent and buy based on that.
For true simulators, and not arcade, I would say PC (sorry). For arcade type, probably X-Box. Secret Weapons of Normandy is cross platform, and there's an MS one for the X-Box that slips my mind right now (Crimson Tide?)
Space Games is a little generic. Ship Battles? Squad combat? FPS? Just sci-fi themed? There's always the StarFleet Battles based games, I think there's a couple of those for PS2, those may be cross platform.
